The Amazon rainforest is the most diverse region in the world. It produces 20% of the planet’s oxygen and is home to 20% of the world’s river water. With 40,000 different species of plants and approximately 2.5 million species of insects, it is no wonder that it is one of the most visited places in South America.
The Amazon actually spans more than 9 countries, giving visitors many options on where to visit. When we traveled in South America, we had a hard time deciding where to visit the Amazon. Some places were too expensive, some too remote and others too conventional and crowded with tourists.
That is why we chose to go to the Amazon from Puerto Maldonado, Peru.
Puerto Maldonado (Peru) is a rather forgotten city when it comes to a place to visit in the Amazon. In Brazil there is the famous Manaus and in Peru the more popular city of Iquitos.
In addition, Puerto Maldonado is fairly easy to reach from Cuzco and multi-day excursions to remote eco-lodges (only accessible by boat) are affordable.
With millions of people visiting the Amazon each year, finding unique and spectacular wildlife can become more difficult as the place becomes more populated. That’s why, while traveling through the best places in Peru, we decided to make the trip from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado to visit the Amazon rainforest.
Here is my guide and review on how to visit the Amazon from Puerto Maldonado, Peru, including information on how to get there, wildlife, booking a trip to the Amazon, what to expect and much more.
