Sillar Route Itinerary + City Tour Arequipa

Tour in the city of Arequipa

Our City Tour in Arequipa begins punctually with pickup at your hotel located in the heart of Arequipa.

We begin our exploration of the city of Arequipa by visiting the charming district of Carmen Alto. From your viewpoint, you will have an impressive view of the three majestic volcanoes that surround the White City of Arequipa: Misti (5,800 meters), Chachani (6,000 meters) and Pichu Pichu (5,300 meters). Additionally, you will enjoy the beautiful agricultural terraces in the surrounding countryside.

Then, we descend to visit the plaza, the church and the cloisters of the traditional and colonial district of Yanahuara. This place is characterized by its large houses and cobbled alleys built with the distinctive white ashlar, a volcanic rock that gives Arequipa the nickname “White City.”

Next, we enter the Historic Center, an area designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

We continue towards the Plaza de Armas, surrounded by three granite portals with brick and lime vaults. In the center of the square, we find a beautiful bronze fountain with three plates crowned by the figure of a 16th century soldier, known as “El Tuturutu “.

Next, we visited the Cathedral Basilica, built in 1656. This majestic neoclassical-style building suffered a fire in 1844, but was rebuilt in 1868. Its façade extends 107 meters and is adorned with 70 classical-style columns, two towers and two bronze medallions.

Our next stop is the Convent of the Company of Jesus, built by the Jesuits. This place is the maximum expression of religious architecture, highlighting its church (1573) and the impressive Polychrome Chapel of San Ignacio de Loyola. Its cloisters exhibit arches carved from ashlar, the characteristic white volcanic stone. Its walls, domes and pilasters show off an exuberant baroque style, while the altars and altarpieces are covered in gold leaf.

Finally, we explore the Monastery of Santa Catalina, built in 1580. This citadel, built in ashlar, covers an area of 20,000 m2.
