The Seven Lakes of Ausangate are a group of stunning turquoise-colored lakes located in the Peruvian Andes, near the Ausangate Mountain. Each lake is known for its unique color and beauty, and they are a popular trekking destination for those exploring the region.
The most common way to reach the Seven Lakes of Ausangate is by embarking on a multi-day trek that typically starts from the town of Tinqui, which is the base for many treks in the area. The trek takes you through breathtaking landscapes and allows you to visit each of the seven lakes.
The trek can vary in difficulty depending on your fitness level and the route you choose. Some treks are quite challenging due to high altitudes, rugged terrain, and variable weather conditions. It’s recommended to be in good physical condition and acclimatize to the altitude before attempting the trek.
The duration of the trek can vary based on the specific route and the pace of the trekker. On average, treks to the Seven Lakes of Ausangate can take anywhere from 4 to 7 days. The distance covered and the number of lakes visited will influence the overall duration.
The dry season, which generally runs from May to September, is considered the best time to visit the Seven Lakes of Ausangate. During this period, the weather is more stable, and the trails are less likely to be affected by rain or snow.
Yes, camping is a common way to experience the Seven Lakes of Ausangate. There are designated camping areas along the trekking route where you can set up your tents. However, it’s important to follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the environment while camping.
While it’s possible to explore the area independently, many travelers choose to hire a guide or join a guided tour for safety reasons and to navigate the sometimes challenging terrain. Local guides are knowledgeable about the area, can provide cultural insights, and can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
As of my last update in September 2021, permits might be required to enter the area, especially if you’re trekking through certain routes. It’s recommended to check with local authorities or tour operators to confirm the current permit requirements.
Remember that conditions and regulations can change, so it’s essential to do thorough research and plan accordingly before embarking on your journey to the Seven Lakes of Ausangate.
