Get ready for a jungle adventure you will never forget!
Starting with pick up from your hotel in Cuzco at 5:30 am, the beginning of the Manu Highway passes through numerous dry mountain interior valleys and picturesque villages. This will give you a quick insight into the lifestyle of the locals and their colorful clothing. A brief stop at Ninamarca will give you the chance to explore the pre-Inca tombs of this archaeological site. The road includes several stops, so you can enjoy seeing the surrounding landscapes, which vary from high mountains to humid forests. The next stop will take place in the town of Paucartambo, which has a beautiful colonial arched bridge. From Paucartambo the altitude will continue to increase and the surroundings will gradually become shrouded in a cloudy haze.
The road will lead you to the Acjanaco pass, which is the main gateway to the Manu National Park. Once you cross the Acjanaco pass (3550 m / 11,647 ft) the environment changes drastically from dry to wet valleys. Don’t miss the splendid view as you look down into the lowlands. The lush and misty cloud forest surrounded by huge rocks and trees where bird watching will be the main objective. You will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of birds, from the Peruvian national bird, the bright red Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, to woolly monkeys, if you are lucky. The trail will descend to Pilcopata (670 m./2198. ft.). Overnight in a hotel (private bathroom, hot shower, WIFI). Arrival at the property (from 4:30 PM) where you will be free to explore the town.
This morning after having our breakfast. We start the day traveling to the port of Atalaya, where you can appreciate the view of myriads of colorful birds, and rich wildlife. The trip passes along tropical plantations of papayas, bananas, etc. On the deck of the Atalaya River, you will embark on a motor boat and navigate this crystalline river of Madre de Dios.
The Atalaya River is located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 meters above sea level. Here, we will start our descent by boat to observe the enormous diversity of bird species, such as herons, vultures, cormorants, etc. until we reach our lodge. There, we will eat a delicious lunch before hiking to Machuwasi Lake, where we will navigate in rafts to observe birds, such as the primitive hoatzin and, with luck, caimans, monkeys and capybaras. Overnight at the lodge.
Early in the morning we will board our boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall along the river bank where different species of parrots gather every morning, such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, the chestnut-fronted macaw, among others. Here they eat clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest and eliminate toxins from their bodies. After a delicious breakfast we will pack up and travel by boat back to Puerto Atalaya, where our bus back to Cusco will be waiting for us. We will have lunch on the way back to Cusco, where we will arrive at approximately 6:30 pm. The way back will give you more opportunities to glimpse some more animals and discover the wildlife of the cloud forest and have breathtaking views of the lush cloud forest with waterfall. Arrival in Cusco should be around 5:30 – 6:00 pm. ** Please let us know if you need an earlier arrival in Cusco.

We have single and double rooms, toilets, showers, dining room, kitchen, two platforms for tents, hammocks and deck chairs, and walking trails. Close to the lodge, you can swim safely in the river. We also have a tree house deep in the jungle, besides a mammals clay lick. There you will enjoy watching wildlife during day and night.
The day before the departure there will be a briefing. In case you cannot attend, please let us know in advance so we can make different arrangements.
For our trips it is necessary to be in good physical health, but how fit depends on the itinerary you choose. The areas where we walk are flat. We always walk very slowly in the jungle, as this is the best way to observe the flora and fauna, but also because it can be very hot and humid. If you take one of our tours, then you will be walking for 3 to 4 hours per day, carrying only a small day pack to carry your water, binoculars and camera. You will return to our comfortable Lodge. The 6-day expedition trip involves walking for 6 hours or more and carrying your tent, sleeping bag etc. All night walks are optional; if you are tired you are welcome stay in the lodge.
Our expeditions are for 6 days, taking you deep into the jungle, walking for 6 hours or more and carrying your equipment (tent, sleeping bag, clothes etc.). These expeditions give you more contact with nature and many chances to see wild life because of the length of time you are walking and also because you will sleep deep in the jungle in tents or hammocks, not in lodges or organized camp grounds. Our normal tours range from 4 to 8 days and involve walking for 3-5 hours at a time. You will not need to carry all your equipment, only water for the walk and your camera and binoculars. The tours also give you the option to visit the Blanquillo private reserve, where you can see the famous Macaw Clay Lick. Of course, as with all our trips, the tours or expeditions can be adjusted to your specific requirements.
There are several reasons why a tour to the Reserve Zone is more expensive than to the Cultural Zone. The boat trip is much longer (8h), and the lodging in the Reserve Zone (Casa Matsiguenka) is also more expensive than in the Cultural Zone. In addition, we include your entrance fee to the national park.
We want to support the local indigenous Matsiguenka communities (Tayacome and Yomibato) that are living in the Reserve Zone (Social Responsibility). Also we like to stay there because the design of the lodge is unique.
You can only fly out from Puerto Maldonado in our program of 8d Reserve Zone. These flights are optional, depend on the demand and are not very exact. Usually the planes leave between 8am and 1pm. One the day before your departure we will know the approximate time of the flight. Please remember that the flights from the jungle are not like the flights from Cusco to Lima. They are very dependent on the weather, especially between December and March (rainy season). We can book your flight tickets, but we have no influence on the airline. We recommend that you have one spare day in Cusco before your flights to Lima, or more if you have international flights.
In our tours and expeditions we have a maximum of 9 people per guide. With more than 9 passengers we will use two guides and divide the group in two for walking and expeditions. We do this so that you have a higher chance of seeing animals and can hear the explanation of the guide.
Yes, all tour prices include mineral water throughout the entire trip. The expeditions include mineral water as well but when you are deep in the jungle river water is boiled to make it suitable for drinking. In addition, you can bring some purification pills.
The food we provide during these tours will be mostly food native to the jungle (typical jungle food and drinks). It will include fish, chicken, beef, vegetable and fruit. Drinks during the tour will include natural juices like pineapple, star fruit, passion fruit, coffee and hot chocolate. We also offer vegetarian food.
Yes, there are mosquitoes and sand flies. The mosquitoes are most active in the morning and at dusk. We recommend that you bring a very good mosquito repellent with you to help avoid these mosquitoes while you are walking in the jungle. All the lodges provide mosquito nets for you beds and the tens which are used have a mosquito net as well.
Yes, we do have a first aid kit with us, but we also recommend that you bring a small first aid kit of your own (basic items of first-aid).
The risk of Malaria is very low in Manu. We recommend that you bring a good insect repellent (with at least 50% DEET) and use long sleeved shirts and trousers. If you choose to use strong medicine against malaria, please check the side effects of these medicines as they can be quite severe! No method is 100% safe against Malaria. If you want you can bring your medication to the jungle (Malaria can be detected from a blood analysis). It is also possible to get medication in the jungle. The risk of Leishmaniasis is also very low in Manu, the best protection being long sleeved shirts and trousers. In Manu there is Plasmodium Vivax, this is curable. You also can get vaccinated against Yellow Fever for the jungle, but it is not necessary. A vaccination against Tetanus is important.
See information of the Who for travellers.
You need to bring a light sleeping bag for the tour or expedition. Normally the temperature is 20°C at night, a hot climate, but sometimes it can be colder (June, July). Binoculars are essential, animals can often be at a distance, or high up in the trees, and this is the best way to get a good look at them.
Flash lights are also very important for the night walks to watch small animals at night time.
Sleeping bag, binoculars and flash light can be hired in Cusco. Let us know if you want to rent them.
On sunny days the temperature varies from 25 to 40°C during the day and from 10 to 20°C during the night. June and July are the coldest month. We will inform you about the current weather conditions before you depart on a tour.
