July is the peak of the dry season on the Inca Trail: day after day of sunshine, cold, clear nights, and the clearest views of the year. It is also the busiest month. The North American and European summer holidays coincide with Peru’s own holidays at the end of the month, when Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 July 2027 are Independence Day. If July is your month, reserve before the 2027 permits go on sale, expected October–November 2026, and book trains and hotels early too.

Weather on the Inca Trail in July
July is typically the driest month in Cusco. Days are sunny, with the thermometer in Cusco (3,400 m / 11,150 ft) reaching around 19 °C (66 °F), while nights fall close to 0 °C (32 °F). The cold is sharper on the trail. At Pacaymayo, the second camp (3,600 m / 11,810 ft), nights drop well below freezing, and the wind at Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m / 13,828 ft) can be icy even under a blue sky. By contrast, the cloud forest on days 3 and 4 is mild, and around Machu Picchu the midday sun is hot.
Days are still short after the June solstice: it is dark by about 6 p.m., and the temperature falls as soon as the sun leaves the camp. The dry air also makes the high sun feel stronger, so protect your skin and lips even when you feel cold.
Crowds: why July is the busiest month
The Classic route has the same daily cap all year, 500 people including guides, cooks and porters. What changes in July is how many people want those spaces, and how busy everything around the trail becomes. Three things stack up:
- International summer holidays: the peak of the US and European vacation season. The US Independence Day weekend falls on 3–5 July in 2027.
- Peru’s national holidays: Friday 23 July (Air Force Day) makes a long weekend, and Independence Day follows on 28 and 29 July. Peruvians travel to Cusco and Machu Picchu in large numbers, and the mid-year school holidays usually fall around the same time.
- Machu Picchu high season: the Ministry of Culture raises the daily capacity to 5,600 visitors in high season. Trains, the Aguas Calientes buses and the Machu Picchu entrance have their longest queues of the year.
None of this changes the trail itself, but it does change the logistics: book your Inca Trail first, then your Cusco hotel and any extra train or Machu Picchu tickets as soon as your dates are fixed. If the Classic route is full, the 2-day Inca Trail has its own quota of 250 per day.
What’s happening in July 2027
- 3–5 July, US Independence Day weekend: 4 July is a Sunday; the holiday is observed on Monday 5 July.
- 15–18 July, Virgen del Carmen in Paucartambo: one of the most spectacular festivals in the Andes, declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation. For several days dozens of masked dance troupes fill the streets of this colonial town at about 2,900 m, a couple of hours by road from Cusco. The main day is 16 July.
- Friday 23 July, Peruvian Air Force Day: a national holiday and long weekend.
- Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 July, Fiestas Patrias: Peru’s Independence Day, with parades and flags everywhere, and the busiest travel days of the year.
How to plan around the busiest week
- Early to mid-July has the same weather with slightly less pressure on trains and hotels than the last week of the month.
- If your dates fall on 23–29 July, book everything early and allow extra time at the Ollantaytambo train station and the Aguas Calientes bus queue.
- Want to see Paucartambo? Plan it before the trek, around 16 July, and use it as part of your acclimatization. Paucartambo is lower than Cusco, and the town is packed, so book transport and a place to stay early.
What to pack for July
- Your warmest sleeping bag: a comfort rating of about −10 °C (14 °F), or rent one from us.
- A down or synthetic jacket, a warm hat, gloves and thermal base layers for the camps and the pass.
- Lip balm, sunscreen and sunglasses: the air is very dry and the sun is strong.
- Layers you can peel off, for the warm valley on day 1 and the humid cloud forest on days 3 and 4.

July is right if school or work holidays fix your dates, and you want the most reliable weather and can book early.
