Huayna Picchu Hike: Tickets, the 2027 Time Rules and How to Fit It In

Huayna Picchu explained for 2027: what the route 3-A ticket includes, the new official entry and summit times as a timeline, how it compares with Machu Picchu Mountain and Huchuy Picchu, and where it fits on each of our tours.

Machu Picchu citadel and Huayna Picchu framed by green mountains, seen from the Inca Trail

Huayna Picchu (Wayna Picchu) is the steep peak that rises behind the ruins in the classic photo of Machu Picchu, about 2,693 m (8,835 ft) high and roughly 260 m (850 ft) above the citadel. The climb takes about 3 hours from the mountain’s control post and back, and you need a specific ticket, route 3-A, which cost S/200 for a foreign adult in 2026; with us it is an extra of US$80. From 1 January 2027 new official times apply: last entry at 10:00 a.m., off the summit by 12:00 noon and 5 h 30 min at most for the mountain and the citadel together.

  • ≈2,693 m(8,835 ft) at the summit, about 260 m above the citadel, according to Wikipedia; other sources give 2,667–2,720 m.
  • ≈3 hthe official average time between entering and leaving the mountain’s control post (RM 000407-2026-MC).
  • 10:00 a.m.last entry to the mountain from 1 January 2027, one hour earlier than before.

What Huayna Picchu is and what the climb involves

The name is Quechua: wayna means “young” and pikchu a broad-based mountain with sharp peaks, so Wikipedia renders it as “young peak”. It stands at the northern end of the citadel, opposite Machu Picchu Mountain, and the Incas built a trail up its side and terraces and temples on top. On tickets and in the regulations it is Montaña Waynapicchu.

It is a short hike but a steep one: about 260 m of climbing, almost all on narrow Inca stone steps, with steel cables on the steepest stretches. Most of the hikers we take up need 45 to 75 minutes to reach the top and a similar time to come down. The summit is lower than Cusco, so the steps, not the altitude, are the hard part. In June 2026 the route closed for a month of maintenance and reopened on 1 July with repaired stairways and new steel-cable handrails, El Peruano reported. If exposure worries you, read our section-by-section guide to the climb and its safety record before you book. To see how the summit compares with every other stop of the trip, use our Machu Picchu elevation guide.

The 2027 rules, step by step

On 31 October 2026 Peru’s Ministry of Culture published Ministerial Resolution 000407-2026-MC, which rewrites Article 12 of the Machu Picchu visitor regulation. That article covers the “alternate routes”, including 3-A Huayna Picchu, 1-A Machu Picchu Mountain and 3-C Great Cavern, for visits from 1 January 2027. The 2027 capacity resolution, RM 000408-2026-MC, schedules mountain-route visitors into the citadel at 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. Together, a Huayna Picchu morning in 2027 runs like this:

  • 6:00 or 8:00 a.m. · Enter the citadelat the time on your ticket, with your passport. Be punctual: entry tickets have a tolerance of about 30 minutes.
  • Sign in at the control postWalk through the lower part of the citadel to the Huayna Picchu control post. The new Article 12 requires you to register on the way in and out, to be in good physical condition and to hold the right ticket.
  • 10:00 a.m. · Last entry to the mountainThe resolution moved the cut-off from 11:00 to 10:00 after a conservation assessment by the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park.
  • ≈3 h · Up and downthe official average time between entering and leaving the control post.
  • 12:00 noon · Leave the summitthe latest time to start back down from the top.
  • +2 h 30 min · The citadelthe extra visiting time in the Llaqta (the Inca city), counted from your entry.
  • 5 h 30 min · Maximum in totalfor route 3-A and the citadel together. Our arithmetic: with a 6:00 a.m. entry your visit ends by 11:30 a.m. at the latest; with an 8:00 a.m. entry, by 1:30 p.m.

In practice, from 2027 Huayna Picchu is a first-thing-in-the-morning plan. With the citadel entry at 6:00 or 8:00 a.m., the comfortable option is to sleep in Aguas Calientes the night before and take one of the first buses up.

What route 3-A shows you, and what it leaves out

Route 3-A belongs to Circuit 3, “Machupicchu Realeza”. The ticket covers the lower royal sector of the citadel on your way to the control post, then the mountain itself, with the view straight down onto the ruins from the summit terraces. Three things people expect are not on it:

  • The postcard viewThe classic photo with Huayna Picchu behind the ruins is taken from the upper terraces near the Guardian’s House, on Circuit 1 (route 1-B) or Circuit 2 (route 2-A). Route 3-A does not go there.
  • The Temple of the Moon and the Great CavernThese caves on the northern face of the mountain are now a separate route, 3-C, open in high season only. From 2027 its last entry is also 10:00 a.m., with an average of 4 hours between entering and leaving its control post and a return by 12:00 noon.
  • The other peaksMachu Picchu Mountain (1-A) and Huchuy Picchu (3-D) have their own tickets.

Inca Trail hikers should note that their permit includes route 3-B for the guided visit, which does not include Huayna Picchu, so the mountain is always a separate 3-A ticket. All ten routes are explained in our guide to the Machu Picchu circuits.

In short: Huayna Picchu for the view down onto the citadel and a short, steep climb; Machu Picchu Mountain for a longer walk on a wider path to the highest point open to visitors; Huchuy Picchu, in high season, for a small summit with little effort. Which one feels more exposed, step by step, is covered in our guide to Huayna Picchu’s steepest sections.

How to fit Huayna Picchu into your tour

With us, Huayna Picchu is an optional extra of US$80 per person, subject to availability. Ask for it when you book, so we can match the ticket’s date and time with your trek, train and guided visit:

  • Classic Inca Trail, 4 daysFrom US$820 for 2027 departures. You arrive through the Sun Gate at dawn on day 4 and have your guided visit on route 3-B at 10:00 a.m., the same hour the mountain closes from 2027. What works is an extra night in Aguas Calientes (US$65, subject to availability) and the mountain at 6:00 or 8:00 a.m. on day 5.
  • Short Inca Trail, 2 daysFrom US$560 for 2027 departures. The easiest fit: Sun Gate on the afternoon of day 1, a hotel night in Aguas Calientes and the climb on the morning of day 2, with the guided visit arranged around your ticket.
  • 1-Day Inca TrailFrom US$490 for 2027 departures. Your guided visit comes after the mountain has closed, so add a night in Aguas Calientes (US$65) and climb the next morning.
  • Full Day to Machu Picchu by trainFrom US$295. A day trip from Cusco. With the 2027 times, the mountain depends on an early train reaching the 8:00 a.m. slot: ask us to check the connection, or add a night in Aguas Calientes.
  • Machu Picchu by car, 2 daysFrom US$150. You visit on the morning of day 2, after a night in Aguas Calientes, but that day also includes the walk back to Hidroeléctrica and about 6 hours on the road. Ask us before adding the mountain.
  • Salkantay Trek, 4 daysFrom US$440. On day 4, at Machu Picchu, you can climb Huayna Picchu for US$80 if you still have energy after three days of trekking.

Still choosing a trek? Compare the 2-day and 4-day Inca Trail, see every option on our Machu Picchu tours page, or check live dates and send your request on Inca Trail booking, and tell us you want Huayna Picchu.

When to go and how far ahead to book

Route 3-A is open all year, but the steps are a different climb when they are wet. According to the SENAMHI data for the Machu Picchu station (1991–2020) that we use in our best time to visit Machu Picchu guide, July (54.2 mm) and August (60.6 mm) are the driest months, followed by September (76.2 mm). October (163.0 mm) and November (172.5 mm) are wetter, and January to March (324.5–340.7 mm) the wettest. Neither morning entry time guarantees a clear summit, so pack a rain layer in any month.

Demand follows the high season. Under RM 000408-2026-MC, the 2027 high season, with 5,600 visitors a day instead of 4,500, covers 1–3 January, 25–28 March, 19 June to 2 November and 29–31 December. This is how far ahead we buy mountain tickets for our travelers:

Travel datesHuayna Picchu / Machu Picchu Mountain
June–August, Easter, Inti Raymi weekThe first to sell out: 3–4 months ahead, or as soon as sales open
April–May, September–October2–3 months ahead
November–March1–2 months ahead

Based on what we see each season when booking tickets; not an official rule. As of early November 2026 the 2027 sale dates had not been announced. The sale calendar, prices for every route and the step-by-step purchase are in our Machu Picchu tickets 2027 guide.
