October is the shoulder month on the Inca Trail: the dry season ends and the rains begin. The first half of the month is often still mostly dry, while the second half brings more afternoon showers. Average rain at Machu Picchu more than doubles from September to October, and nights are milder. Do not confuse “shoulder season” with “empty”, though. On 2 October 2026, the official system showed no spaces left on 21 of the 31 October start dates for the Classic route. For October 2027, book before the permits go on sale, expected October–November 2026, or at least four to five months ahead.
- 163 mmaverage October rain at Machu Picchu, against 76 mm in September.
- 21 of 31October 2026 dates already full on the Classic route by 2 October.
- 8–11 Oct 2027Peru’s Battle of Angamos and the US Columbus Day weekend.
Weather on the Inca Trail in October
These are the official climate normals of Peru’s weather service, SENAMHI, for its Machu Picchu station (2,399 m / 7,871 ft), near the end of the trail:
| Month | Rain | Average high / low |
|---|---|---|
| September | 76 mm (3.0 in) | 23.4 / 11.1 °C (74 / 52 °F) |
| October | 163 mm (6.4 in) | 22.8 / 11.5 °C (73 / 53 °F) |
| November | 173 mm (6.8 in) | 22.8 / 12.0 °C (73 / 54 °F) |
| January, for comparison | 341 mm (13.4 in) | 20.6 / 11.8 °C (69 / 53 °F) |

In practice: mornings are often clear, and clouds build up during the day, with showers more likely in the afternoon and in the second half of the month. October still gets only about half the rain of January, so it is a very different month from the real rainy season. Nights at the high camps are less harsh than in June and July, but Pacaymayo (3,600 m / 11,810 ft) is still cold, and Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m / 13,828 ft) can be cold and wet. The good news: the hills turn green again, and the cloud forest on days 3 and 4 starts to wake up.

Crowds: why October still sells out
We update our availability calendar from the official system of the Ministry of Culture. On 2 October 2026, it showed 21 of the 31 October start dates full on the Classic route (route 1, Km 82), and 18 of 31 full on the 2-day route (route 5, Km 104). Some of those dates are simply in the past, but most of the month was booked well ahead. October has fewer people than July or August, and fewer than September, but many travelers choose it precisely for that reason.
- The daily cap does not change: 500 people a day on the Classic route, including guides, cooks and porters, and 250 on the 2-day route.
- Machu Picchu is still in high season: in 2026, the higher daily capacity of 5,600 visitors applied until 2 November (RM 285-2025-MC). The 2027 dates have not been published yet.
- Two long weekends: 8–10 October and 30 October–1 November 2027, when Peruvians travel to Cusco.
What’s happening in October 2027
- Friday 8 October, Battle of Angamos: a national holiday in Peru, and a long weekend.
- Monday 11 October, Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day (US): a trip from Saturday 2 to Monday 11 October uses only 5 vacation days. See our guide to planning the Inca Trail from the USA.
- Monday 1 November, All Saints’ Day: a national holiday, which makes 30 October–1 November a long weekend.
Rain, fires and closures
October is the end of the fire season in the Andes, before the rains settle in. In October 2023, the Ministry of Culture closed route 1 of the Inca Trail for three days, from 18 to 20 October, after a forest fire caused rockfall onto the path; groups were moved to route 5 while it was closed. Closures like that are rare and short, and they are decided by the authorities. If one affects your dates, we tell you straight away and follow the official alternative.
What to pack for October
- A real rain jacket and a rain cover for your daypack, plus rain pants or a poncho for the afternoons.
- A sleeping bag with a comfort rating of about −5 °C (23 °F), enough outside the May–September peak, or rent one from us.
- Quick-dry layers instead of cotton, and dry bags for your clothes and electronics.
- Boots with good grip and trekking poles with rubber tips: wet Inca stairs are slippery.

Is October the right month for you?
October is right if you want green landscapes and slightly fewer people than in the dry months, and you don’t mind some afternoon rain. If you need the driest weather, choose September or earlier. If you are flexible on the date, the first half of October is usually drier than the second. See every month compared in our month-by-month guide, and read how the wet months really feel in the Inca Trail in the rainy season. Classic Inca Trail departures in 2027 keep the 2026 price of US$795 if you book by 31 December 2026 (see how to book). Check October 2027 in the calendar below.
