Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu: 2 days / 1 night

The Short Inca Trail is the last and most scenic stretch of the original Inca path: about 11.5 km (7 mi) from Km 104 past the terraces of Wiñay Wayna to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you see Machu Picchu for the first time. You sleep in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, not in a tent, and visit the citadel with your guide the next morning. It has its own quota of 250 permits per day, so it is a good choice when the 4-day route is sold out or when you have less time.

  • Distance: about 11.5 km / 7 mi, 6–7 hours of hiking on day 1
  • Highest point: the Sun Gate, 2,720 m / 8,924 ft (start at Km 104, 2,100 m)
  • Difficulty: moderate, about 650 m of climbing · Minimum age: 8
  • Night: 1 night in a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes
  • Machu Picchu: Circuit 1 (route 1-B) on day 1 through the Sun Gate, and Circuit 3 (route 3-B) on day 2 for the guided visit
  • Price: US$520 per person for 2026 departures and US$560 for 2027 departures
  • No porters: on this route each hiker carries their own daypack

Afterwards you have free time, or you climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain if you added it. How hard is the Short Inca Trail?

Moderate. You hike 6–7 hours on day 1 and climb about 650 m, mostly on stone steps between Km 104 and Wiñay Wayna. The altitude is lower than on the Classic route (the highest point is 2,720 m), but you should still spend a day or two in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first. More in how hard the Inca Trail is.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as you can. The 2-day route has its own quota of 250 permits per day and popular dates sell out. Check the live calendar on this page.

Can I hire a porter?

No. Porters cannot be hired on the 2-day route: each hiker carries their own daypack. Leave the rest of your luggage at your hotel in Cusco, or at our office if your hotel cannot keep it.

Where do we sleep?

In a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, the town below Machu Picchu. Dinner is at a restaurant in town and breakfast at the hotel.

Which Machu Picchu entrances are included?

Two: Circuit 1 (route 1-B) as you arrive through the Sun Gate on day 1, and Circuit 3 (route 3-B) on day 2 for the guided visit, with the entry time (usually between 6:00 and 11:00 a.m.) coordinated with your guide. Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain can be added for US$80 each, subject to availability.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 8 years on the 2-day route. Under-18s and university students aged 18–25 get a US$30 discount. See the Inca Trail with kids.

Can I join if I travel solo?

Yes. You join a group already confirmed for your date, with no supplement.

Can I have vegetarian meals or tell you about allergies?

Yes. Tell us when you book and we arrange the box lunch, dinner and breakfast accordingly. If you have a medical condition that may affect the hike, let us know and check with your doctor before booking.

What happens in February?

The Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance, so there are no departures that month. Closures can also happen at other times because of weather; affected departures are moved to an alternative.

  • Original passport, the same one used for your permit (and your valid university card if you booked the student price)
