Created in 1982 between the Marañón and Ucayali rivers, Pacaya Samiria covers about 2.08 million hectares of flooded forest. Its dark, still waters earned it the name “Jungle of Mirrors”. It is the place to see pink and grey river dolphins, and SERNANP records 449 bird species.

How do I get to Pacaya Samiria?
Iquitos has no road connection to the rest of Peru, so you fly there, usually via Lima. From Iquitos, a 2-hour drive to Nauta and a boat trip take you into the reserve.
When is the best time to visit?
High water, roughly December to May, lets boats enter deep into the flooded forest. Low water, June to November, opens more trails and concentrates fish and dolphins in the channels. SERNANP recommends May to September.
Is Pacaya Samiria the largest protected area in Peru?
It is the largest national reserve. The largest protected area overall is Alto Purús National Park.
Do I need vaccines?
The yellow fever vaccine and malaria prevention are recommended for Loreto. See a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before your trip.
