How Inca Trail permits work

Access to the Inca Trail is controlled by Peru’s Ministry of Culture through a daily quota of permits for each route: the Classic route, which starts at Km 82 and is used by the 4-, 5- and 7-day programs, and the short route, which starts at Km 104 and is used by the 1- and 2-day treks. When a day’s quota is used up, that start date is sold out — there is no waiting list and no way to add spaces.

Only authorized tour operators can request permits. When you book with us, we request your permit with the details from your passport: your full name, passport number and nationality must match exactly. Bring that same passport on the trek, because it is checked at the trail’s control point.

Renewing your passport before the trip? Send us the new number as soon as you have it. Permits are personal: they cannot be transferred, resold or changed to another traveler’s name, and entry can be refused if your details don’t match the permit.

Every Terra Quechua Inca Trail tour includes the trail permit and the Machu Picchu entrance for your route, so you don’t need to buy either of them separately.

2027 dates: when to book

2027 start dates are open for early booking in the calendar above, from January to December except February. Peru’s Ministry of Culture is expected to release the official 2027 permits in October or November 2026 (the date has not been announced yet); until then, 2027 dates show as Early booking and we request your permit as soon as sales open. Once permits are released, the calendar shows the real spaces for each day, and dates marked Few left are close to selling out. Classic Inca Trail 4 Days

The full classic route from Km 82: you cross Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m / 13,828 ft), explore lesser-known Inca sites such as Runkurakay and Sayacmarca, pass the terraces of Wiñay Wayna and reach Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate on day 4. Short Inca Trail 2 Days

The essence of the Inca Trail in one hiking day: you start at Km 104, walk through cloud forest and original Inca stairways, visit Wiñay Wayna and get your first view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate. You sleep in a hotel in Aguas Calientes and visit the citadel again the next morning. Ideal if you are short on time. See the Short Inca Trail 2 Days.

Inca Trail prices for 2027

The prices in the table above are per person for our group service and come directly from each tour, so they are always current. Currently the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days starts at US$795 and the Short Inca Trail 2 Days at US$520 per person. For 2027 departures the Short Inca Trail costs US$560, and from 1 January 2027 new bookings for the Classic cost US$820.

Deposit: pay 30% online to secure your permit (currently US$238.50 per person for the Classic 4-day and US$156 for the Short 2-day). The 70% balance is paid at our office in Cusco on your first day in the city, in cash or by card (6% fee).
Private departures: price per person by group size, from US$850 (8 people) on the Classic 4-day and from US$520 (6–10 people) on the Short 2-day. See the prices tab of each tour.
Discounts: US$30 off for travelers under 18 and for university students aged 18–25 with a valid university card (ISIC cards are not accepted). Discounts are not cumulative.

Inca Trail booking conditions

These are the questions we are asked most often before booking the Inca Trail. Here are the short answers; the full text is in our Inca Trail terms and conditions.

If I cancel, how much is refunded?

Cancellation requests must be submitted through Terra Quechua Perú’s official channels:

30 days or more before departure: 70% refund.
8 to 29 days before departure: 50% refund.
Less than 8 days before departure, no-shows or cancellations during the trip: no refund.

What if my booking has not been submitted to the authorities yet?

A refund may be issued less an 8% administrative and banking fee, with a minimum charge of USD 35.

Can I change my date, the participants or the tour?

Bookings are personal and subject to availability and the regulations of the relevant authorities. Once confirmed, travel dates, participants and tour types cannot be changed. A date change may require a new booking and additional fees. Complimentary options may be changed up to 48 hours before departure, subject to confirmation.

What if you cannot get my date?

If we cannot confirm your booking due to lack of availability, you can choose an alternative date at no additional cost or receive a full refund.

If incorrect information or failure to meet booking requirements prevents us from securing the reservation, we will make reasonable efforts to resolve it; if the booking cannot be completed, the applicable refund policy applies, subject to current law.

What documents do I need?

Accurate personal information and the original passport or identification document used for the booking, as required by the authorities. Travelers receiving student discounts must present valid supporting documentation. Incorrect information, invalid documents or failure to meet official requirements may result in denied entry without a refund when the issue is the customer’s responsibility.

How do prices and payment work?

All prices are in US dollars (USD) and may change without prior notice before payment. Once payment is confirmed, the agreed price remains unchanged. Services are paid in advance using the payment methods available on our booking platform.

Are extra porters or equipment rental included?

No. Additional services, such as extra porters or equipment rental, are charged separately and are subject to availability. Prices and conditions are given at the time of booking.

Can the itinerary change?

Yes. Itineraries are a guide and may be adjusted due to operational requirements, weather, safety, official restrictions or other circumstances beyond our control. Interruptions caused by force majeure are handled according to the specific circumstances and applicable law.

How long do I have to make a complaint?

Within 90 days of the service completion date, through our official channels. Each complaint is reviewed in accordance with the agreed terms and applicable law.

Which Machu Picchu circuit is included?

Machu Picchu is visited on fixed circuits set by the Ministry of Culture. With the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days your permit includes Circuit 1 (route 1-B), used as you arrive through the Sun Gate, and Circuit 3 (route 3-B) for the guided visit at 10:00 a.m. With the Short Inca Trail 2 Days you arrive on Circuit 1 (route 1-B) on day 1 and enter again on day 2 through Circuit 3 (route 3-B), usually between 6:00 and 11:00 a.m., at a time coordinated with your guide. Before you go: altitude and preparation

Cusco sits at over 3,300 m (10,800 ft) and the Classic trail peaks at Dead Woman’s Pass, 4,215 m (13,828 ft). We recommend arriving in Cusco at least one day before your trek: a full day taking it easy and drinking plenty of water is usually enough for most people to acclimatize. The pre-trek briefing with your guide is mandatory and takes place in Cusco the evening before departure.

Inca Trail permits: frequently asked questions

How often is this Inca Trail availability updated?

Every 30 minutes we check the spaces from the Ministry of Culture’s official permit system for the 4-day and 2-day routes, and the calendar shows the exact time of the latest official reading (Lima time). If a reading is more than 24 hours old, we do not show it as live. Spaces can change within minutes in high season; your permit is guaranteed once your booking is confirmed.

Can I hike the Inca Trail without a tour operator?

No. Permits are only issued through licensed tour operators, and every group must hike with a licensed guide.

How far in advance should I book the Inca Trail for 2027?

For May to September, reserve before the 2027 permits go on sale (expected October–November 2026). For April and October, 4–6 months ahead; for other months 2–3 months is usually enough. Our month-by-month book-by calendar has the details.

When are the 2027 Inca Trail permits released?

The release has moved later in recent years: permits used to go on sale in October, but the 2025 permits opened on 4 November 2024 and the 2026 permits between 17 and 25 November 2025, one month per day. The 2027 permits are expected in October or November 2026; the exact date has not been announced. Under a new rule (Ministerial Resolution 000333-2026-MC), operators must pay each permit in full, with every hiker’s name and passport, within minutes of reserving it, and names cannot be changed afterwards. That is why we ask for your passport details when you book: we already accept early bookings for 2027 and request your permit as soon as sales open.

When is the Inca Trail closed?

Every February, for maintenance and conservation. No treks depart that month.

How many people can hike the Inca Trail per day?

Up to 500 people per day can start the Classic route, and that number includes guides, cooks and porters. The Short Inca Trail from Km 104 has its own quota of 250 people per day.

How much does the Inca Trail cost in 2027?

With Terra Quechua, the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days starts at US$795 and the Short Inca Trail 2 Days at US$520 per person (group service). See the route table above for every option.

Can I change the name on my permit?

No. Permits are personal and non-transferable. If a traveler cancels, the permit cannot be given to someone else.

What if I get a new passport after booking?

Send us your new passport number as soon as possible and we update it in the system before the trek. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Peru.

Is the Machu Picchu ticket included?

Yes. Our Inca Trail tours include the Machu Picchu entrance for your route’s circuit — see “Which Machu Picchu circuit is included?” above.

How hard is the Classic Inca Trail?

It is a challenging hike: about 42 km (26 mi) over four days, with many stone steps and a high point of 4,215 m (13,828 ft). With reasonable fitness and a day to acclimatize in Cusco, most hikers complete it.

Is the 2-day Inca Trail worth it?

Yes, if you are short on time. You hike about 11.5 km (7 mi), enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, sleep in a hotel and visit the citadel twice.

Is there an age limit for the Inca Trail?

There is no official maximum age. With us, the minimum age is 12 on the Classic 4-day trek and 8 on the 2-day route. Hikers in their 60s and 70s complete the trail every year: what matters is good walking fitness, a medical check before you travel and time to acclimatize in Cusco. If you prefer a gentler option, the 2-Day Inca Trail has a single hiking day and a hotel night.

Is the Inca Trail harder than Kilimanjaro?

No. Kilimanjaro reaches 5,895 m (19,341 ft) with a night summit push over 6–8 days, while the Classic Inca Trail tops out at 4,215 m (13,828 ft) in four days. The Inca Trail’s challenge is its many stone steps rather than extreme altitude.

Are there bathrooms on the Inca Trail?

Yes. The campsites and several rest stops have basic toilet facilities maintained by the park. On our Classic trek we also carry a portable toilet tent, part of the service at no extra cost. Bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer. On the 2-Day Inca Trail you sleep in a hotel in Aguas Calientes.

What happens if my date is sold out?
