How Far in Advance to Book the Inca Trail in 2027: A Month-by-Month Book-By Calendar

Why companies give different booking times, a month-by-month book-by calendar for 2027 with Easter, Inti Raymi and holiday dates, and how the new 2027 payment rule changes the game.

How Far in Advance to Book the Inca Trail in 2027: A Month-by-Month Book-By Calendar

Ask five companies how far ahead you need to book the Inca Trail and you’ll get five answers: “three months,” “six months,” “a year.” They are not all wrong — they are answering different questions. Once you understand why the answers differ, planning 2027 gets much simpler. Below you’ll find the explanation, a month-by-month “book by” calendar for 2027, and the new rule that is likely to make early booking matter even more.

Short answer for 2027: for May–September, reserve before the 2027 permits go on sale (expected October–November 2026). For April and October, 4–6 months ahead. For January, March, November and December, 2–3 months is usually enough — except Easter and Christmas weeks.

Why everyone gives you a different answer

There are really two “sell-outs,” and most advice mixes them up:

  • The official sell-out. On release day, authorized operators buy permits for their clients on the government platform. For the most popular months, the official inventory can be gone within a day or two of that month opening.
  • The operator sell-out. Until now, operators could hold spaces for three hours before paying, and some bought blocks for clients who hadn’t booked yet. Those spaces were resold for weeks or months — which is why “book 4–6 months ahead” sometimes worked even for July.

For 2027 that second layer is shrinking. Under Ministerial Resolution 000333-2026-MC, published in September 2026, every reservation must be paid in full within about 15 minutes, with each hiker’s name, and names cannot be changed later. The Ministry introduced it after finding that almost 63% of audited reservations had been cancelled. Our reading as an operator: fewer speculative spaces will be left to resell after release day, so for peak months the only reliable strategy is to be on your operator’s list before sales open. You can read the full rule explained in our 2027 permit release tracker.

The 2027 “book by” calendar

This is the guidance we give our own clients for the Classic 4-day trail. It is based on how quickly each month has sold in recent seasons; it is not an official schedule.

If you hike in…DemandBook byWatch out for
January 2027Low–medium2–3 months aheadRainy season; New Year week is busier
February 2027—ClosedThe trail closes every February
March 2027Medium2–3 months aheadEaster: Holy Week runs 21–28 March 2027 — book those days at release
April 2027High4–6 months aheadStart of the dry season
May 2027Very highBefore release (Oct–Nov 2026)Corpus Christi in Cusco, 27 May 2027
June 2027Very highBefore releaseInti Raymi, 24 June 2027
July 2027Very highBefore releaseUS summer holidays and Peru’s national holidays, 28–29 July
August 2027Very highBefore releaseEuropean summer holidays
September 2027HighBefore release or 5–6 months aheadUsually a little easier than July–August
October 2027Medium–high4–5 months aheadShoulder season; first showers late in the month
November 2027Medium2–3 months aheadUS Thanksgiving week (25 November 2027)
December 2027Medium2–3 months aheadChristmas and New Year weeks — book 4+ months ahead

For the Short Inca Trail (2 days), which has its own quota of 250 people per day, you can usually book a little later — but May to August still fills early.

Three things that mean you should book earlier

  • You need one exact date. If your flights, a wedding or a cruise fix the day, you have no room to move. Flexible travelers can often find a date a few days earlier or later.
  • You are a group of six or more. Every one of you needs a permit on the same day. On busy dates, a single space is easier to find than eight.
  • You want a combination. Adding Huayna Picchu, a specific train or a particular hotel in Aguas Calientes adds more things that can sell out.

Can you book the Inca Trail last minute?

Sometimes, in the low season. In January, March, November and December we occasionally have spaces with a few weeks’ notice, and the calendar on this page shows them in real time. For the Classic route in the dry season, last minute is not a strategy. If you are already in Cusco, the 1-Day Inca Trail and the Short Inca Trail in 2 days are your best chances, and there are treks that need no Inca Trail permit at all — see our alternatives for 2027.

Before you book: a quick checklist

  1. Check your passportThe permit is issued with your passport number and the name cannot be changed. If you will renew it before the trip, do it first or tell us the new number as soon as you have it.
  2. Pick a main date and two backupsA day or two of flexibility is often the difference between getting a permit and not.
  3. Plan acclimatizationAdd at least two nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the trek.
  4. Protect your other bookingsUse flexible flights and hotels until your permit is confirmed.
  5. Reserve with a depositWith us, a 30% deposit secures your place in the queue and the balance is paid before the trek.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book the Inca Trail for 2027?
For May to September, before the 2027 permits go on sale (expected October–November 2026). For April and October, 4–6 months ahead. For January, March, November and December, 2–3 months is usually enough, except around Easter, Christmas and New Year.
Why do companies give such different booking times?
Some quote how fast official permits sell on release day; others quote how long they can still resell spaces they bought earlier. From 2027 operators must pay each permit in full within minutes, so that second pool is expected to shrink.
What is the best month to hike the Inca Trail?
May and September combine dry weather with slightly fewer crowds than June–August. April and October are good shoulder-season options with more availability.
Can I book now if the 2027 permits aren’t out yet?
Yes. We take early bookings for 2027 and request your permit as soon as your month opens. Your date is confirmed when the permit is issued.
Does the 2-day Inca Trail sell out as fast?
Usually not. It has its own quota of 250 people per day, so it often has spaces after the Classic route is full, although May to August still fills early.
