Pallay Punchu, also written Pallay Poncho, is a colored mountain in the south of the Cusco region whose ridges rise like the teeth of a saw above the Langui-Layo lagoon. It sits at more than 4,700 m (15,420 ft), the walk to the main viewpoint takes about an hour, and it sees a fraction of the visitors of Rainbow Mountain. In May 2026 the travel magazine Viajes National Geographic listed it among the six most spectacular colored mountains in the world. This guide covers where it is, how hard the hike is, when to go, and how it compares with Vinicunca and Palcoyo.

  • 4,700 m+15,420 ft at the viewpoint area; 4,791 m is quoted for the top.
  • ≈1 houruphill walk to the main viewpoint.
  • ≈4 hoursby road from Cusco, about 190 km each way.

What is Pallay Punchu, and is it the same as Pallay Poncho?

Yes, they are the same place. Pallay punchu is Quechua for “decorated poncho”: pallay is the woven pattern of Andean textiles, and punchu is the Quechua form of poncho. You will also see it called Pallay Puncho, Pallay Punchu of Apu T’acllo, after the mountain it belongs to, and Cóndor Sayana, the name of its viewpoint.

Unlike Vinicunca, where the colors lie in soft, rounded stripes, here the rock layers were tilted almost upright and eroded into sharp blades of red, ochre, green and brown. According to Peru’s official news agency, the formation is about 250 million years old. A local resident found the view in April 2020, during the lockdown; his photos spread quickly, and visitors started to arrive from 2021.

Where it is and how to get there

Pallay Punchu is in the district of Layo, province of Canas, in the south of the Cusco region. The road from Cusco follows the Vilcanota valley to Sicuani and then climbs to Layo, on the shore of the Langui-Layo lagoon. It is about 190 km and roughly four hours each way, which makes it the longest drive of Cusco’s three colored mountains. From Layo it is a short drive to the trailhead.

Because of the distance, the early start and the lack of direct public transport to the trailhead, most travelers visit on a day tour. Our Pallay Punchu 1-day tour leaves Cusco before dawn, stops for breakfast on the way, includes the entrance fee, and returns in the evening after lunch in Layo, where trout from the lagoon is the local specialty.

The hike: short, but high

The walk from the trailhead to the main viewpoint takes between 45 minutes and an hour. It is not long, but it starts high and climbs steadily, so the altitude is what you feel: walk slowly, and stop when you need to. From the viewpoint you look along the colored ridge with the lagoon far below. When the weather is good and the group is feeling strong, a longer walk along the ridge is possible.

Acclimatize first. Pallay Punchu is more than 1,300 m higher than Cusco. Plan it for your third day in the region or later, eat a light breakfast and tell your guide if you feel a strong headache, nausea or dizziness. Our guides carry oxygen and a first aid kit.

Pallay Punchu and Palcoyo have no official tourism record, so their figures come from local authorities and operators and can vary. See the full comparison in Rainbow Mountain vs Palcoyo vs Pallay Punchu.

In short: choose Pallay Punchu if you want dramatic shapes and few people and don’t mind a long day on the road. Choose Palcoyo if you have little time to acclimatize, and Vinicunca if you want the famous view.

Best time to visit and the weather

  • April to October (dry season): clear skies and the best colors and views. Days are roughly 5–18 °C (41–64 °F), and nights drop below freezing.
  • November to March (rainy season): fog, hail and even snow on the ridge can hide the colors. Tours still run, but visibility is a gamble.
  • All year: strong wind is common in the afternoon, which is one reason tours start so early.

What to bring

  • Warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves and a hat.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm: the sun is strong at this altitude even when the air is cold.
  • Shoes with good grip; the path is loose gravel in places.
  • Water and a few snacks.
  • Cash in soles for anything you buy in Layo. The community entrance fee, usually between S/10 and S/20, is included in our tour; if you travel on your own, bring it in cash.

A place that belongs to its community

The mountain is managed by the community of Layo, and the entrance fee goes to it. The people here also know the high-Andean plants of the area: one of them, sasawi, is traditionally used for respiratory complaints. Stay on the marked path, take your rubbish back with you and ask before photographing people or their animals. Since the National Geographic mention, the Cusco tourism office has been promoting the area, so it may not stay this quiet for long.
