Ask five companies how far ahead you need to book the Inca Trail and you’ll get five answers: “three months,” “six months,” “a year.” They are not all wrong — they are answering different questions. Once you understand why the answers differ, planning 2027 gets much simpler. Below you’ll find the explanation, a month-by-month “book by” calendar for 2027, and the new rule that is likely to make early booking matter even more.
Why everyone gives you a different answer
There are really two “sell-outs,” and most advice mixes them up:
- The official sell-out. On release day, authorized operators buy permits for their clients on the government platform. For the most popular months, the official inventory can be gone within a day or two of that month opening.
- The operator sell-out. Until now, operators could hold spaces for three hours before paying, and some bought blocks for clients who hadn’t booked yet. Those spaces were resold for weeks or months — which is why “book 4–6 months ahead” sometimes worked even for July.
For 2027 that second layer is shrinking. Under Ministerial Resolution 000333-2026-MC, published in September 2026, every reservation must be paid in full within about 15 minutes, with each hiker’s name, and names cannot be changed later. The Ministry introduced it after finding that almost 63% of audited reservations had been cancelled. Our reading as an operator: fewer speculative spaces will be left to resell after release day, so for peak months the only reliable strategy is to be on your operator’s list before sales open. The 2027 “book by” calendar
This is the guidance we give our own clients for the Classic 4-day trail. It is based on how quickly each month has sold in recent seasons; it is not an official schedule.

For the Short Inca Trail (2 days), which has its own quota of 250 people per day, you can usually book a little later — but May to August still fills early.
Three things that mean you should book earlier
- You need one exact date. If your flights, a wedding or a cruise fix the day, you have no room to move. Flexible travelers can often find a date a few days earlier or later.
- You are a group of six or more. Every one of you needs a permit on the same day. On busy dates, a single space is easier to find than eight.
- You want a combination. Adding Huayna Picchu, a specific train or a particular hotel in Aguas Calientes adds more things that can sell out.
Can you book the Inca Trail last minute?
Sometimes, in the low season. In January, March, November and December we occasionally have spaces with a few weeks’ notice, and the calendar on this page shows them in real time. For the Classic route in the dry season, last minute is not a strategy. Before you book: a quick checklist
- Check your passportThe permit is issued with your passport number and the name cannot be changed. If you will renew it before the trip, do it first or tell us the new number as soon as you have it.
- Pick a main date and two backupsA day or two of flexibility is often the difference between getting a permit and not.
- Plan acclimatizationAdd at least two nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the trek.
- Protect your other bookingsUse flexible flights and hotels until your permit is confirmed.
