Itinerary Manu Jungle Expeditions 4 Days / 3 Nights

DAY 1: CUSCO – PAUCARTAMBO - CLOUD FOREST – PILCOPATA

We will leave Cusco early in the morning in one of our vehicles. We will travel through interesting valleys between the Andes Mountains and picturesque rural communities. We will visit pre-Inca tombs of the Lupaca culture known as Ninamarca and later stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful colonial town, and visit the interesting town museum.

On the way, we will have lunch in the cloud forest. We will continue our descent through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the Spectacled Bear and the Cock of the Rock, the Peruvian national bird that performs a unique courtship ritual. We will also be able to see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, etc.

We will continue observing the spectacular nature along our journey until we arrive at our lodge, in the town of Pilcopata, where we will spend our first night, after which we will have time to visit the town.

DAY 2: PILCOPATA - MANU LODGE

After breakfast, we will take a hike during which we will be able to observe the forest fauna, such as monkeys and birds. Then, we will visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center. Then, we will travel to Puerto Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 meters above sea level.

There, we will start our descent by boat to observe the enormous diversity of bird species, such as herons, vultures, cormorants, etc. until we reach Manu Lodge.

There, we will swim in the river and have lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit a swamp where we will be able to observe birds such as toucans, woodpeckers, macaws, etc. In the evening, before dinner, we will go to observe the wildlife of Manu, which stand out at night. Overnight at the lodge.

DAY 3: MANU LODGE - MACHUWASI - MANU LODGE

Early in the morning, we will board our boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall along the river bank where different species of parrots gather every morning, such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, the chestnut-fronted macaw, among others. Here they eat clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest and eliminate toxins from their bodies. Afterwards, we will return to our lodge for a delicious breakfast. After breakfast, we will hike through the forest for 2 hours.

We will return to the lodge for lunch and then rest at the lodge or swim in the river. After lunch, you will also have the option to practice zip lining. In the afternoon, we will visit Machuwasi Lake, where we will explore in rafts to observe birds, such as the prehistoric hoatzin and, hopefully, other animals such as monkeys and capybaras. Then we will take a night walk through the forest to look for insects and amphibians. After the night walk, we will have dinner and spend the night at Manu Lodge.

DAY 4: MANU LODGE - PUERTO ATALAYA - CUSCO

Early in the morning, we will embark on an exciting boat ride that will take us on a 20-minute journey down the picturesque stream. During this fascinating journey, we will have the opportunity to witness a unique natural spectacle: the parrots’ visit to lick clay, a behavior that allows them to obtain essential minerals for their diet.

We will admire various parrot species, such as the green parrots, the blue-headed parrot (Pionus Menstrus), the mealy parrot (Amazona farinosa), the chestnut-fronted macaw (Ara severa), among others, in their natural habitat, offering us an unforgettable spectacle of color and sound.

After this enriching experience, we will return to the lodge where a comforting breakfast will be waiting for us. Afterwards, we will get ready to pack our memories and experiences lived in this magical jungle.

Once we have completed our preparations, we will say goodbye to the lodge and head to the port of Atalaya aboard the boat.

There, our bus will be waiting to take us back to the city of Cusco, ending our jungle adventure with a sense of gratitude and awe for the beauty and diversity of the nature we have had the privilege to explore.
