On the Lares trek route, you’ll interact with the locals in their isolated Inca communities where people are keeping the Inca Culture alive. This incredibly picturesque trek includes peaking ice glaciers, shockingly blue glacial lakes, waterfalls, llamas, alpacas and on the 3rd day rewards you with natural volcanic hot springs to soothe your tired muscles.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco – City Tours

Upon your arrival to Cusco you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel. There you will receive a short briefing and the rest of the morning enjoying some leisure time to rest and acclimatize to the altitude.

In the afternoon at 1pm, we will pick you up at your hotel and we’ll begin your tour of the Imperial Cusco City, a living example of the mix of Andean and Spanish culture. We then continue our journey visiting the Santo Domingo Convent built over the Temple of the Sun (Koricancha), as well as the Ancient Inca Palace and the Main Worship Centre of the Sun God. We proceed to visit the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman which dominates the city. Finally we go to the vestiges of Qenqo, Pucapucara and Tambomachay, located in the north east of the city. Afterwards we take you back to your hotel in early evening.

Day 2: Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha (Lares trek-Inca Trail)

You will be picked up at 6am to begin your adventure. Now your dream over the next 5 days becomes a reality, as you start the 2 hour drive to the village of Huaran (2840m/9,318ft) located in the famous Sacred Valley between Pisac and Urubamba. Huaran will be the starting point to freedom. We meet up with the horsemen and pack up the horses. Leaving the Sacred Valley behind us, we trace northwards following a gentle ascending trail along the small Cancha Cancha River. It takes approximately 6 hours to reach our destination, a small village named Cancha Cancha (3800m/12,477ft) where we spend the night.

Day 3: Cancha Cancha – Quishuarani (Lares trek-Inca Trail)

Leaving Cancha Cancha we continue north-east up the valley, passing small thatched stone houses,edgey mountainous ranges and typically Peruvian transverse landscapes. After 3 hours the path plateaus out, after the intense ascension of the last 2 hours, we arrive to the highest pass called Pachacutec Pass (4758m/15610ft). Trapezing over the reward of reaching the top, and transfixed by the superb views of Pachacutec Lake and the snowy mountainous peaks of Pitusiray, we embrace the moment to enjoy the marvilous sites before us and to feel the suns rays replenish us. We then head down for the next 2 hours and get to enjoy a refreshing lunch. After lunch we will descend for another 1.5 hours into the valley’s several glacial lakes, herds of alpacas, llamas and sheep. Tonight we camp at (3,870 m/12,694ft) close to Quishuarani village, which has typical stone and thatched houses.

Day 4: Quishuarani – Cuncani – Lares – Ollantaytambo (Lares trek-Inca Trail)

Mid way through our trek we will conquer the second mountain pass Hillkiccasa Pass,(4200m/13779ft) and surrender to the images of the plunging Peruvian Andes as we are surrounded by nature in it’s purest form. The majestic Colquecruz and Pitusiray Mountains are as exciting as enjoying a piece of candy to watch from the pass. We continue our trek through the Puna grasslands, undulating and productive agricultural sites and natural prestine lakes. After 5 hours of hiking we reach Cuncani, a small peasant community. From Cuncani we head down through a lush valley with extensive agricultural areas, fruit bearing trees, varied flora, and native flowers like begonias and wild orchids. Finally, we reach our destination, The Lares Village (3100m/10170ft) where we are welcomed into the natural volcanic hot springs for an hour to soak, shower off, have lunch and take a siesta if you like.

After lunch in Lares we take our private transport to Ollantaytambo, where we spend the night in our hotel.

Day 5: Ollantaytambo – 104kms – Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes (Lares trek-Inca Trail)

By this stage on your trek, you will have really gotten into the swing of things. Fully motivated and rearing to go, early in the morning we take our train for two hours to 104 kms (2,100m/6,927ft), Cusco-Machu Picchu way. With the exhilaration starting to lock in we begin our trek, passing the first checkpoint. Afterwards we initiate a moderate climb for three hours to the magnificent archaeological site of Wiñayhuana. (2,650m/8747ft). Once there, we notice the weights lift off our shoulders, as we take in the spectacular views of the Urubamba Canyon, the stunning Inca sites around us, and the connection to the traditional four day Inca Trail. We continue onward towards the Sun Gate, (2,730m/9,007ft) where we take flight with excitement as we get our first spectacular view of Machu picchu in all its brilliance and its majestic monumentality. Your destiny awaits you, just one more hour downward, to the Citadel of Machu Picchu, taking the bus to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend our last night in our hotel.

Day 6: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Bursting with excitement on your final surreal day, we take the first bus to Machu Picchu archeological site, making sure we tour every nook and cranny of this New 7 Wonder of the World and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The Citadel of the Incas, Machu Picchu, what an unforgettable experience. Your guide will expertly direct you through the energetic ruins and its diverse main streets. Then on your own, you can wander around the town squares of the world’s spiritual center of esoteric wisdom, as well as climb the intricately carved stairways made of stone. Or you can stay still and find the peace within as you sit in the pure delight of the moment.

If you wish to indulge in a few of the following activities on your own you can (not included in the price):

Climb up Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain to appreciate the beauty and magnificence of Machu Picchu from the views above (additional cost)
You will be given some time to walk to the Sun Gate or Inti Punku. (Free of cost)

Other optional activities in Aguas Calientes include a visit to the new local museum or to the hot springs (will be an additional entrance fee).

When you are ready, you will descend to Aguas Calientes, have a leisurely lunch on your own, and later on board the train at 2:55pm or 18:20 pm for the return trip to Cusco with the Expedition Train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo station (Cusco), where you will catch our private van back to Cusco .

CHECK AVAILABILITY

Terra Quechua Peru offer daily departures on the Inca Trail (excluding February when the trail is closed).

Since 2000 the Inca trail has been regulated by the country of Peru. This has provided many wonderful things, like clean trails and camping sites, but it has also limited the amount of people on the trail each day. Now only 500 people are permitted on the trail every morning – this includes hikers, guides, porters and cooks. If your date is not available, do not fret, there are many wonderful treks to Machu Picchu – just as beautiful as the Inca trail and not as crowded.
